Peak Cartier?
Are we approaching “Peak Cartier”? Demand for Cartier vintage and neo-vintage watches is exploding. A shocking turnaround from the collector disdain for the brand only 2 years ago (aside from pre-1970’s models). Proof of the bubble reaching tipping point is WatchBros London saying he does not care for the brand, but had to start stocking a few pieces in inventory to stay relevant. Sure it was the more rare Cartier Cristalor, but still… Our prediction is Cartier bubble will finally burst in about 6 months for all but the rare vintage models.

Hype Fizzles at Monaco Legends
This weekends “event of the year” Monaco Legends auction drew mixed results with a number of heavily-hyped vintage watches selling near low estimates. Top collectors worldwide regularly flock to Monaco Legends for an exciting selection of the rare, and interesting vintage watches. Monaco delivered the goods with 278 lots sold over 2 days. Lots of drama with Buyer interest was tepid for modern Rolex and AP from the past few years hype cycle, as well.
The auction confirmed BULLISH trends for vintage Cartier, Patek Philippe Ellipse, and Universal Geneve. Breguet vintage and neo-vintage showed strength. Rare and unusual vintage watches did well, showing that collectors are becoming more selective and broadening their interests.
The auction featured a few “Story Watches” with interesting provenance and full-set. The Rolex COMEX Seadweller and Universal Geneve Italian airforce pilot watch sold for DOUBLE the high estimate. But a much-hyped Rolex Bakelite dial Pepsi with a Pre-Castro Cuban provenance sold near low estimate, as did a Rolex Datejust in platinum, that was said to be possible a piece unique
More Collectors are getting “The Call” from Rolex
More and more collectors are reporting getting “The Call” from AD’s. More supply is hitting the market and AD’s are smiling and dialing to move inventory. Over the next 3-4 months there will be ZERO premium for all but a few models. Patience is paying off for collectors who refuse to pay above retail.
