Patek Philippe Bargains under $10,000? Collector Interview: From $49 Casio to $400K Richard Mille

Some of the best values in watches can be found in vintage Patek Philippe of the 1950’s and 60’s. These watches combine timeless modernist designs, elegance of gold, and some of the finest movements ever made.

An example is this Patek Philippe Ref# 2455 Calatrava in pink gold, circa 1953. Being offered at FutureGrail online auction this Saturday September 14. Estimated at $7,000-$14,000 the current bid is at just $9,000.

Below is the Patek Philippe Ref# 1491 Calatrava, circa 1944. Estimated at $10,000-$20,000, the current bid is $14,000. Check out the beautiful case, and unusual shaped lug design. More can be seen in our video interview with specialist Arnaud Tellier here.

These watches were made in low production numbers, adding scarcity value. The timeless designs stand up to an modern Patek. And you will never run into another collector wearing one of these on the wrist.

Tellier, is the former director and curator of the Patek Philippe museum in Geneve working closely with Philippe Stern. He spent thousands of hours in the Patek Philippe archives, making him one of the few on the planet with that level of access and knowledge on all things Patek Philippe.

Is $49 Casio G-Shock as good as $400,000 Richard Mille? Apparently, Yes.

We interview Super Collector @WhichWatch63 whose “collecting journey” has taken him from Casio’s and Tissot’s to the best of Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet...and yes. ROLEX. He discusses navigating the AD minefield, the education (mistakes) all collectors go through, and the surprisingly low costs of Ferrari maintenance, vs BMW. Interestingly, he keeps his Casio’s in a $5,000 Goyard box, and seems to enjoy them as much as the RM’s and AP’s.
